About the LEAP Program

“Children must be taught how to think, not what to think”

Welcome to Henrico County LEAP, developed in partnership with the Henrico Early Learning Coalition.

We know that 85% of brain development happens before a child is five, and a love of learning must be cultivated early. Attending a quality preschool program is more important than ever to ensure school readiness. In the Governor’s recent directive, the state of Virginia was tasked with finding a solution to the preschool access gap. Henrico County LEAP is here to share information on the work being done in Henrico County to ensure all children have access to early learning programs.

In early 2019 the Henrico Early Learning Coalition was formed to create a system for families that would allow greater access to preschool classrooms. With a grant from the Virginia Early Childhood Foundation and a strong partnership with Henrico Education Foundation, private childcare centers began offering care and education for students that were unable to secure a space in public school.

The LEAP program supports families through a program called Mixed Delivery. This pilot program offers publicly funded preschool spots in neighborhood childcare centers. Currently, the pilot has 65 Henrico County Public School students enrolled at five childcare centers with a plan to expand the number in the coming years. We are committed to making sure that every young child in our county has access to a quality preschool program.

The Henrico County LEAP program is here to connect the services that are provided in our county with the families that need them. Check back often as we will be highlighting our partners and their work each month, and sharing any new developments in services for children birth through age five.
